Sacrifice Zones

Sacrifice Zones January 14, 2017-February 3, 2017 Arthouse Gallery presents works from Leisel Whitlock's Sacrifice Zones, which considers places harmed by environmental damage or economic and social disinvestment. In this series, California-based Whitlock turns her camera on her native Louisiana. Exploring what it means to create distance-between artist and subject, between image and viewer-she radically alters the digital photographs she takes, fiercely shifting the colors and straining legibility. Eyeball-assaulting vibrancy captures the viewer's attention, yet these images have an internal contradiction. Though they demand to be noticed, images of recognizable subjects dissolve into a nearly impenetrable wall of abstraction. Seeing does not always mean understanding. Whitlock prevents us from forming the illusion-perhaps habitual when looking at photography with poignant or painful subject matter-that we can have even an indirect experience of these places. Instead, she creates uncertainty, and invites us to ask questions. Leisel Whitlock is a multi-media artist based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Raised in New Orleans, much of her recent work comes from a perpetual search for consciousness and understanding. Whitlock's work spans a media that includes video, audio, still photography, instillation, sculpture, and text.
