World War II Aircraft, Antique and Classic Airplanes of the 30's, 40's and 50's, Home Built Aircraft and much, much more will be flown and displayed to commemorate the Countdown to Kitty Hawk and the Centennial Celebration of Powered Flight at the Placerville Airport, October 5, 2003.
Placerville's Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 512 and the El Dorado County Chamber of Commerce will be combining efforts to celebrate one of the five most outstanding achievements of the last 100 years.
The sky will be filled with WWII planes such as a B-25 Mitchell (Bomber flown by Doolittle's Raiders on the first strike at Japan), Sea Fury (very large British Fighter/Bomber), P 51 Mustang (Fighter powered by Rolls Royce V12 engine and flown by WWII Ace Chuck Yeager), Stearman Bi-planes. Plus classic and antique civilian aircraft like the Lockheed Electra and Howard DGA (large Radial Engine personal Lear Jets of their day) as well as experimental home-built airplanes.
This event is part of a worldwide celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the first powered flight being presented by experimental aircraft associations across the nation, because Wilbur and Orville created the first experimental aircraft.
The National Experimental Aircraft Association has commissioned the building of an authentic replica of the Wright Flyer, which has already made its first appearance in a series that will end with a flight on December 17, 2003 at 10:35 a.m. at Kitty Hawk. The exact time and place 100 years ago where powered flight began.
